St Mary’s School, Kaikorai is an integrated catholic school situated in Dunedin City. St Mary’s offers your child/ren a broad range of learning experiences aimed at the 21st Century learner. We use the learning areas to meet the needs of our learners and have established a contextual learning programme to achieve this.
Providing a broad range of opportunities for your children allows them to work towards achieving the different criteria required for our ASPIRE Awards: The Dame Whena Cooper Award in recognition of Helping, Caring and Honesty; The Sir Edmund Hillary Award in recognition of Cultural and Sporting Involvement; and The Sir Ernest Rutherford Award in recognition of Academic Effort and Achievement.
St Mary’s welcomed their new principal, Richard Duffy in 2012. He teaches in our senior class during the afternoons while Kelly Cross teaches the mornings. Rachael Deerness our DRS teaches in our stimulating junior class each morning with Kelly taking over the reigns in the afternoons Monday to Thursday. The school has the capacity for a third class and its board of trustees is aiming to expand the roll to take advantage of this.
Both the Education Review Office (ERO) and the Catholic Education Office have recognised the excellence in teaching and learning in the school.
We hope that your family enjoys and benefits from joining our community of learners.
St Mary’s Kaikorai is a Roman Catholic School catering for Dunedin boys and girls from New Entrants to Year 6. Catholic values are promoted and reflected in our decision making.
You will find us situated superbly within the Dunedin City environment. The school grounds are nestled in a large, spacious environment giving it a real feel of calmness.
A strong sense of community exists and is an important component of the school’s make-up. We have excellent support from our families. Children work closely within a co-operative environment and support one another.
You are invited to have a look at a short video some of our senior children made (only problem is the upload limits us to less than 3 minutes, so its pretty rushed).
Tucked away in a green setting in Cromwell Street, just off Taieri Rd, the school had an extensive revamp in 2005. The classrooms were upgraded and the administration areas, library and toilets rebuilt making for modern and pleasant learning spaces for your children. Outside, the playground is complemented by a green field area with play equipment, the school’s vegetable garden and orchard, plus a grass pitch for hockey and football games.
You will discover that St Mary’s pupils perform well when they move on to intermediate and secondary education. The family atmosphere helps them form lasting bonds and comments from current pupils reflect this.
All of us are important and treated fairly” and “people work together here – no one is left out” they said during a brainstorming session on how they feel about their school. The special character of St Mary’s Kaikorai was seen in their comments “we learn to be like Jesus” and “Jesus is present in our school.
