Discovery Time Transition Programme
Making a good start at school is crucial. The early days are all important and St Mary’s Kaikorai School prioritises a good start for your child.
Studies have shown that children adapt more readily to school when they have been given the opportunity to integrate into classroom procedures gradually.
Not far from central Dunedin, St Mary’s runs the Mary Wonders transition programme for four year olds about to make the jump from early childhood education. The children join the junior class once a week to take part in well-planned, structured, “hands-on” experiences.
Each Friday afternoons from 1:30 pm till 2:30 pm Mary Wonders operates in Room 1. The children get to experience our Mary Wonders programme alongside the junior children’s Discovery Time programme.
We want to offer any families considering joining us the opportunity to see what type of educational experiences are available at our school”. With this in mind its very important to provide children with chances to get a feel for how we operate.
Your child is invited to join the ‘Mary Wonders’ programme as soon as they turn 4 along with a parent or caregiver. Please contact the school office to register or if you would like more information.
Six weeks before your child is due to start school the new entrant teacher will make contact with you about bringing your child along for ‘school visits’. This will involve a weekly visit spread over six weeks prior to your child’s starting date. You and your child are most welcome to come along to our school assemblies.
It is also a really good idea to bring your child to the playground at the weekends or after school so they get familiar with the surroundings of the school before their first visit.
If you would like more information about school visits or have any questions, please either phone or call in and see Rachael Deerness the Junior Class Teacher.
